The year 2010 has been a phenomenal year for me, full of simply incredible experiences that I would like to share with you. Just wanted to take a moment on the occasion of my birthday 4 days ago (which coincides with end of the year) to use my penman’s freedom and your obliged attention to express the 3 blessings that I am thankful for this year.

These 3 things changed my life forever; the 1st relates to business, the 2nd to self, and the 3rd to family.

Completed my very own first $3 million project consulting for Shell

Where did Basim disappear? All of a sudden, poof! He’s gone. Here’s my story of why I disappeared from the US. Life has been really different for me here in Brunei. In short, is has been…EXHILARATING.

First, it started as a 6-month assignment. I never even got the chance to say goodbye to my friends in the USA. Next thing you know it, I’m here at Brunei Shell Petroleum for nearly 3 years. I’ve set myself up in a house with a car and new life and everything. It all happened very quickly.

I must say alhamdulillah I was very proud of myself for having completed my 1st ever independent consulting contract. Among naysayers of my youth, I prevailed and gained some of the best experience of my life quitting SAIC to start my own company. My dream came true!

Backpacked Southeast Asia for the 1st time ever with Noura, this year

Backpacking in 2010 was an incredible experience for me. It was a great way to get in touch with my inner self and really get to know my wife and spend quality time together.

Remembering March 2010: this is a 2010 year-end special

Noura and I traveled all around Southeast Asia trekking Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand for nearly 2 months. I learned a lot of life lessons from backpacking and met people from all over the world that truly touched me.

Those were some of the best days of my life with Noura. I never knew how adventurous she is! Notwithstanding stereotypes aside, my Syrian friends in Brunei were pretty impressed that she had the aptitude and athletic prowess to backpack with me. She’s definitely a guy’s type of girl.

My Wedding (August 4, 2008)

Finally posting my wedding photos for the first time. This is a traditional Syrian wedding that starts with a chant as the groom among a pack of men doing a sword dance has to ask for the bride’s hand from her home and take her to the wedding hall; the rest is typical dancing, food, and fun! (August 4, 2008)

Noura’s new car: 2009 Nissan Latio

We just bought a new car for Noura. It’s her first car – a 2009 Nissan Latio Sport. It’s very vibrant, hip, and fits her personality like a charm! Alf mabrook, Noura, you’re stepping it up in life.

Honestly, I’ve never bought a brand new car in my life. It’s really high class and beats the hell out of buying an old car – I mean I know anyone can just say that but it’s a tipper when the decision is close. I was going to buy a Corolla, but we decided why the hell not…get something exciting!

Taking the oath of marriage

These are the moments I wed Noura. This is the katb-el-ktab which is before the marriage ceremony. When I heard zawwajtuka ibnatee which means “I thee wed my daughter” nothing can describe the feeling…nothing.

It’s like in 1 split second the weight of responsibility shifted from one man to another. It is him saying this is the daughter I raised all my life and poured every ounce of love into her and I just hope you can try to do the same.

It is an immense over pouring. It is a quantum leap of faith and security. This is the beginning of my life as a married man.

Engaged, less than 5 months left

This is my sweetheart. I am getting married soon and I can’t wait. A new era of my life is about to begin. Am I ready for it? What have I done to prepare for it? We’ll see. She’s worth whatever it takes! It’s inches away…I can feel it.

Her name is Noura…but of course! (What else would her name be?) She is a vibrant character and a very good listener. She’s a very simple girl. Almost anything I say now could be too judgmental so I am just going to ask you to make duaa for me. She seems like a wonderful person. I like her smile, her mom, and especially her Dad. He’s quite an accomplished man. Her family is quite put together and her siblings are young and fun, yet respectful. I’m really happy. I ask that Allah guides me and helps me carry forward. Ameen.
